Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram is a personality theory that recognizes 9 distinct personality types. The word Enneagram comes from two Greek words: ennea = nine, and gram = drawing.

What sets the enneagram apart from other personality theories?

Other theories tend to focus on behavior. The Enneagram goes beyond the superficial to focus on motives. The WHY behind the WHAT provides vital insights into ourselves and others. This emphasis on motives is a very biblical concept; check out Proverbs 21:2, 1 Samuel 16:7 and 1 Corinthians 4:5.

How do I know what type (number) I am?

Online assessments are a helpful tool but the results must be combined with taking the time to become familiar with the descriptions of all 9 types. Then you can rule out some and determine the 2 or 3 you resonate with the most. As you think it over you can get it down to your single type. Often input from someone who knows you really well is helpful.

Some easily identify their type the moment they read through the 9 descriptions, while for some it can take weeks or even months of contemplation before they settle on their type. During this process it is essential to focus on the core motivations.

I highly recommend scheduling a “What’s your type?” session with me.

Does my type (number) ever change?

Nope. You remain your type for your entire life. Your behavior will change due to various circumstances but your core motivations will remain static.

Is the enneagram Christian based?

No. It is an amoral tool - just like Myers-Briggs, DISC, Strengthsfinder or even the 5 Love Languages. However, it fits really well with a Christian worldview - particularly with the Enneagram’s focus on motives and its recognition of our core weakness (sin, brokenness).

How will I benefit from enneagram coaching?

Possible (likely?) outcomes include: increased self-awareness, emotional intelligence and empathy. These developments will make you a better leader, spouse, parent, friend and follower of Christ. Personal growth could also include overcoming fears, gaining greater confidence, being more content and developing healthier relationships and life priorities.

I firmly believe however that the good news of Jesus Christ changes lives - NOT the Enneagram. Used correctly, the Enneagram shouldn't encourage you to “try harder” but rather lead you to lean into the mercy and provision of God as found in Jesus Christ.

What is a typical coaching session like?

Typically 50-55 minutes in duration and is usually via Zoom but can also be in person or over the phone. A session involves a lot of interaction; an authentic “back and forth” in a confidential setting. There will likely be elements of pastoral counseling and / or spiritual direction. Like in most such settings - the more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it. Ultimately the work of greater self-awareness is yours, not mine. I’ll function as a guide or a facilitator - not so much as a teacher and definitely not as a guru!

Do I need to be a Christian to do Enneagram coaching with you?

No, not at all! But you need to understand that I will be approaching the Enneagram from a faith-based perspective. With that said - I promise to not try cramming a Bible down your throat!

What books do you recommend for learning more about the Enneagram?

IMHO the best primer for getting started in the Enneagram is The Road Back To You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile. Beyond that? Email or call me and I’ll tell you! (No sales pitch or obligation.)

Why do you do Enneagram coaching Dave?

Because I received Enneagram coaching the summer of 2020 and it was so insightful / helpful / encouraging / interesting / to me that I decided I wanted to be an Enneagram coach myself. I became a certified coach through Yourenneagramcoach.com.
(Check out their website - they rock! https://www.yourenneagramcoach.com/a/21487/2NzcWsrk )

I have a specific interest in working with church leadership teams. Enneagram training is a great team building tool.
